The Living Canvas Portfolio

Master-Planned Landscape Design & Outdoor Living Sanctuaries

The project features a comprehensive front-yard landscape transformation for a traditional home, combing structured foundation beds, focal specimen plantings, natural rock features, and clean property line definition. Check out the foundation plantings and curved mulch beds, the mid-lawn focal island bed, and the overall aesthetic and impact. – Enhanced curb appeal, material contrast, and our professional finish.

1. Foundation Plantings & Curved Mulch Beds

Clean Edging & Dark Mulch: Deeply contoured, organic-curved beds run along the full length of the front porch and house facade, filled with rich dark brown mulch.

Layered Plant Selection: * Low-profile, rounded evergreen shrubs (such as boxwoods) provide structural grounding and year-round green.

Flowering perennials (including white hydrangeas/roses) add soft texture and bright color against the brick and siding.

An ornamental weeping accent tree anchors the corner near the arched window.

Lawn Seeding / Straw Cover: Fresh topsoil and straw ground cover have been laid along the bed perimeters to establish clean new turf lines.

2. Mid-Lawn Focal Island Bed

A circular island bed sits in the middle of the lawn area, featuring a small weeping ornamental tree as a secondary focal point, surrounded by fresh dark mulch and neat edging.

3. Monolithic Boulder Feature

Natural Stone Accent: A massive, upright natural boulder serves as a dramatic centerpiece near the driveway entrance.

Decorative River Rock Base: The boulder is set in a tear-drop-shaped bed lined with dark landscape edging and filled with light gray river rocks/gravel for contrast.

Base Plantings: Small rounded shrubs are tucked at the base of the boulder to soften the stone’s edges.

Location: Burlington, CT

Custom bluestone patio, built in fire pit, native perennial borders…

The Challenge & Design Solution: The homeowner wanted a functional outdoor living space for weekend gatherings, but their backyard had several slope and poor drainage. Our design team leveled the area using natural stone retaining walls and integrated multi-tiered planting beds to control erosion while creating distinct zones for dining and relaxing.

From Side Yard to Sanctuary: Maximizing Property Potential

Side yards and backyard spaces are often overlooked, yet they hold the true potential of a property’s landscape. While front yards make the first impression, these secondary and rear areas offer the privacy, intimacy, and functional square footage where daily outdoor living actually happens. By thoughtfully designing side pathways, creating seamless transitions, and transforming neglected perimeters into vibrant outdoor rooms, every square foot of the landscape can be elevated from mere transitional space into an intentional, cohesive sanctuary.

Paths through a landscape are so much more than mere functional connectors; they are the narrative thread of the outdoor experience. A well-designed walkway guides the eye, slows the pace, and transforms a simple stroll from one part of the yard to another into an intentional journey of discovery. Whether winding gently through a side garden, stepping purposefully across a lawn, or bridging the gap between an active patio and a quiet backyard retreat, these pathways create a sense of rhythm and anticipation, inviting you to pause, explore, and truly inhabit every corner of your property.
